The award for the best award goes to … September 12, 2006

Posted by Sharath Rao in humor.

I like some of these popular contests and awards that newspapers, magazines and sometimes even individuals ( like popular blogger Andrew Sullivan ) sometime come up with. I am not talking about the regular opinion polls before elections, its the other trends -either something really simple – like “name the cliche that irritates you most” (look here for the answer) or something really outrageously ‘umsimple’ like the Michael Moore award for “egregious moral equivalence in the war on terror” from Andrew Sullivan, one of the most popular bloggers around.

A similar one goes the foot in the mouth award which is given by a UK agency for “for a baffling quote by a public figure”. Two of my favorites from their list of winners include the following:

“I could not fail to disagree with you less.”

– Boris Johnson, Member of British parliament

And hard to beat :

“Reports that say that something hasn’t happened are always interesting to me, because as we know, there are known knowns; there are things we know we know. We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns — the ones we don’t know we don’t know.”

– Donald Rumsfeld, indicating that Iraqi WMDs are perhaps in one of these categories !

Although I am not sure if the above idea is originally from Rummy himself, I used his precious words to structure my previous post.

Given his punctuated and cryptic non-utterances, Vajpayee-jee can be nominated to this award ! Only ofcourse, if Hindi were eligible. Or an Indian daily can take this up !
